Default Recycling

Campaign proposal

Free recycling in all schools

Purpose of campaign

We believe that recycling should be free and compulsory for all schools. There is an urgency to act now for the future of this planet as it is young people who will inherit a damaged planet as a result of today’s actions.

There are financial implications for charging to facilitate recycling, which means straining school resources and often deterring schools from recycling at all. Depending on their size, schools can currently spend between £300 and £1000 per year on waste disposal. Through reducing, reusing and recycling, schools can cut waste production by more than 50%, saving money on disposal costs.

We believe that recycling in schools is something Local Authorities need to prioritise as a necessary cost and work in partnership with schools to provide free recycling facilities and collections.

one word;

LOL

more words;

foolish, ignorant, misguided, wrong, out of date, misunderstand, pointless and LOL (thought I'd throw it in again).

Industry accounts for the largest amount of pollution in the UK; recycling your old maths jotter will not save the planet when there are no regulations on industrial pollution (the Carbon Trading Scheme in the EU has failed miserably and has actually provided some businesses with a financial incentive to pollute more because of the low value the EU placed on trading rights) .

This campaign makes about as much sense as using nuclear lightbulbs (yes, they are more energy efficient, no, this does not reduce the amount of C02 by one ounce, as C02 is created when making the electricity, not using it, and plants have continued to produce at the same rate because there has been no massive drop in demand).

The guys who are doing this are either genuine fools, in which case under no circumstances should well educated and intelligent people seek to follow them, or utter cynics who are doing it only to salve their conscience when they have no real wish to tackle the full scale of the problem.

If you are not going to tackle the real issues of global warming and climate change you might as well do it right - kick up your feet, drive an SUV and get out the sunblock. Don't bother recycling and leaving industry untouched - you're only fooling yourself.

We have met with lib dems/conservative shadow ministers and they are going to table an EDM
Furthermore they are setting up debates in Westminister House..

So thats the progress so far..

..Atleast it has a realistic simple aim i mean who came up with To change the way the World Bank lends money to developing countries
a) what will we do with it
b) the world bank will suddenly change their policies due to UKYP
c) frankly, how many young people care? it is an important issue for them but i think most of them care more about their transport fee or how much they will have to pay at uni.

I'd like to point out that even though recycling a few peices of paper might not save our planet, it certainly will help, with the planet, it doesn't matter how you help just as long as you do something!

That's wrong on so many levels.

We either have to take it seriously - which, thanks to this "doing my bit" attitude that people who back campaigns like this subscribe to we aren't, nowhere near enough - or ignore it until the backlash gets so bad we have to take it seriously.

If we mess about (ie do this) then we will become complacent and the first time anybody will think to really address the problem is when we all wake up dead - by which time it will be too late.

What Liam said.

This only got in last year because of a gimmicky speech and the excitement of being in the House of Lords. Plenty of organisations' sole purpose is environmental campaigning; the UK Youth Parliament has nothing to add - this is clear from Oxfam basically running this year's recycling campaign. Choosing issues like this just makes it look like there is nothing specific to young people.

Was there some problem with the campaign submission guidelines this year? It's embarrassing to be rooting out the stupid in public.

Default Re: Recycling

The problem is, that this campaign will inevitably lead to the recycling of paper, which benefits nobody and increases the amount of CO2 in the air
