Campaign proposal
To change the way the World Bank lends money to developing countries (e.g. reducing interest rates in global lending from the World Bank and making sure projects are run by countries where the projects are held) Purpose of campaign We aim to get the UK Government to use its power and influence in the world bank to reduce interest rates from global lending from the world bank and make sure the projects its lends money to are run by the countries where the projects are held. To do this we want to use a variety of tactics such as flash mobs, the organisation of a festival similar to live aid and meetings with decision makers to raise awareness of the issue and encourage the public to lobby their MPs. While I agree with the sentiment of this campaign, it seems very unrealistic in its aims.
The World Bank is an international organisation. As such, we'd need to convince a lot more than the British government that this is a good idea... and let's face it, we have a hard enough time just doing that anyway. We should focus on achievable issues that concern the young people of Britain specifically.

This campaign is in theory an absolutely excellent idea, but I'm not sure whether it falls outside the remit of the UKYP and if it is actually achievable or not...
We'll see.

I don't feel that this is a relevant campaign to UKYP - yes, it's an important issue but there is absolutely no point in making it a national campaign as
a) the government will do what it wants with its own money b) surely there are many charities out there going for exactly the same thing with a lot more experience in these matters and more credibility c) the time frame would have to be a lot longer than a year - which is what we'll have It's a fantastic theory but it will never work - at least as a youth parliament campaign. It's too idealistic. x black_thirteen x Unlucky for some... |

who came up with this?
a) what will we do with it b) the world bank will suddenly change their policies due to UKYP c) frankly, how many young people care? it is an important issue for them but i think most of them care more about their transport fee or how much they will have to pay at uni. so many BIGGER charities are trying to do this. what makes us diffrent? why will having it as one of UKYP's campaigns make huge organisations/ govt's suddenly change their minds? |

Although new to this process, I find this proposal just silly. Surely the basic objective of UKYP is to represent young people in the UK? International issues surrounding the World Bank are neither primarily related to the UK nor young people. I dont think anyone would question the worthiness of the sentiment but I hardly think UKYP is the correct platform for this campaign. Lets resolve problems relating to young people in the UK first before attempting to solve problems even Whitehall could not hope to make a difference to.

I think getting the UKYP properly listened to as an organisation is more important. As stated we need to focus on issues we can change that are more within the UKYP's remit. If i knew there would be definate outcome from mthe campaign I'd vote for it but likelihood the WB even realise it's going on is slim therefore we need to focus on things we can change, and get them changed, before going big on an issue like this. Nice idea though.

All very well hoping to meddle in the world's economic mess, we'll be the ones sorting it out after all, but I for one have no idea how any of it works. A more realistic and probably more beneficial in the long run aim could be basic economic education. Government would jump at the chance to demonstrate safeguarding agasint htis kind of disaster again without having to throw capitialism out the window.
