"Global warming. The world’s going to end. It’s our fault – it’s up to us to do something about it, etc.” We all know the lectures too well. We’re told if we keep flying as we do now, future generations will suffer the consequences. And what do they do? Parliament has recently put forward plans to build a new runway at Heathrow, and to extend runways at other major airports such as Birmingham and prepare for more flights.

OK, fair enough, so maybe that’s one of the bigger extreme issues. At least the Government are encouraging us to use public transport more often, right? Well, sort of. As both inflation and the price of fuel come down, fares seem to be soaring; my area has seen rises of 12%. Hardly a way of promoting ecofriendliness, it seems.

If the government genuinely wants to create a sustainable future for Britain, they need to show more consistency and not expect people to accept ‘green taxes’ to travel into city centres, only to have train stations down the road closing. How can we encourage cycling, for example, when the UK’s cycling provisions are so dire? Politicians urgently need to start practicing what they preach.
