Default Barack Obama: Your Views

http://www.ukyouthparliament.org.uk/203361.html

On 4th November Barack Obama won a sensational election victory to become the first black president of the United States. In front of a jubilant crowd at a victory rally in Chicago, Obama said, “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.” MYPs were asked what they thought of Obama’s election victory ...

“Was Obama voted for because of his race or because he’d make a good President? It’s wrong that several decades after the civil rights movement that race should be the deciding factor in a presidential election. I do not believe that this is a proud historic moment for America, instead it just exposes America’s shortcomings. By letting race decide the next President of the U.S. people have forgotten what makes a good president. If it had been another country, the change that Obama has created by being elected would have been enough. However America has a grasp on the world’s fate, as someone once said ‘if America sneezes, the world catches a cold’. We will just have to see whether an evidently inexperienced president is enough to fix the problems left by the Bush administration.”

Fatima Ibrahim, Age 15, Deputy MYP Harrow

“I believe that this election is going to be a landmark in history for anyone who feels that they cannot make a difference and should be something that we should encourage and use as a model to prove that anything is possible with the right amount of determination. In today’s society we are told that racism and other forms of discrimination are on the decline but even so, these attitudes still exist. Hopefully alongside Lewis Hamilton becoming world champion in the Formula One, Barack Obama will make a considerable change to the ways in which people are so quick to judge on appearances and cultural backgrounds.”

Bridget Hutchings, Age 17, Deputy MYP Essex

Thumbs up Re: Barack Obama: Your Views

Although Presidant Elect Obama's race was a key issue in the election America is changing. Obama obviously conviced America to vote. (He did had some good promises.) But, the thing is will Barack Obama live up to his promises? Another reason is Sarah Palin. Many Americans would agree she was abit off. Those coloured cards with her own opinion on and the fact she wouldn't tell anyone who she voted for. This could (and maybe would) have put many off John Macain. One last point: America isn't all racist whites...anymore.

Too early to form much of an opinion. He has alot of idea, alot of change in mind. He may be able to pull it off, time will tell I suppose.

His race didn't win him the election. It got a lot more people interested but really it was his economic policy that won him it ie he didn't think the American economy was fine and dandy.

Barack will be a good president, Im just not sure about him though :S He built his whole campaign on the words "hope" and "change" and hardly gave out any policies, and Joe Biden was a great running mate, but I feel John McCain should of won the election.

Not to be racist or anything, but considering there have already been 2 foiled attempts to assasinate him, but personally I do not think he will last long in office.

I'm sure with the amount of popularity and power he will have Barack Obama could do a lot of good. He won't, he will realise that chanting "Hope" and "Change" will get you elected but not re-elected.

Beware of Obama, far to many people especially the Youth are putting way to much emphasis on him having dark skin and being a Democrat who says "change" allot.

Please watch this short video, it might be enlightening.

He seems great so far...

But he did put the 'race' into 'the race for president'

I think he will do a fair bit of 'good'-please not the qualifiers. However, he'll have to do it quickly or else the special interests will become entrenched within his administration, look at both Bush and Clinton.

The economy should be his first priority obviously, followed by the environment and healthcare. Personally I'd like to see him take on religion but as he's a committed Christian that's unlikely

Another point-he's from the most corrupt city in the most corrupt state. I don't think he's background will be totally white, hell his foreground might not be either!
