Default Overprotective parents - Issue 7

By Emma Gallen

http://ukyp.org.uk/203361.html

Flicking through the newspaper a few weeks ago there was a story about “America’s Worst Mom.”First thing I thought was, “she must be really bad if it’s making the news here.”

Did she sexually abuse her children?
No.

Did she beat them till they were at death’s door?
No.

She’s supposedly the worst mother because when her son asked if he could use public transport alone from the centre of New York city, she said yes and gave him the money and subway cards.

I know parents are getting ridiculously over protective everywhere, not allowed out in thedark by yourself, even though you are 17. No taxis alone despite you being 19. I know it’s meant to be “for our own good” and that they trust us “it’s just all the other people who we don’t trust.” I just can’t help but think if we were given that little more independence, we’d know how to handle ourselves and keep safe.

A lot of parents are over-protective, there's no reason why a 16 year old is at more risk than a 70 year old, or indeed a 30 year old.

I'm given a lot more independence than most young people in that I live alone and see no problem with it

My sister often complains to my mum because I have more freedom than she was when she was younger but I believe that a little freedom doesn't hurt anyone.

The more protective a parent is, the more likely the child will rebel.

young people need some freedom. they need to be able to be independant and need to learn to become 'street wise' if not then they are at even more at risk because its like a lamb to the slaughter. people need to have expereinces to learn and as alexander says where no different from a 70 to a 30 year old if fact where probably more able bodied to deal with bad situations.

parents should make there children aware of dangers but not wrap them in cotten wool and bubble wrap!

It's a parent's duty to ensure their children can survive on their own, I reckon that if a sixteen year old can't survive independently the parents have failed to prepare and educate them for life

i totally agree
but parents still see their kids as little children, they just cant let go of them. If parents and children attempted to see the psychology, and logic in each others' decisions, then things would become a bit more realistic.

I find it funny that although i've just done all my GCSEs and im 16, im still told how to do certain things like putting clothes away, or folding a towel up (even though i have been able to do that for years might i add).

i hate it when my parents are over protective

i think sometimes they should think about the fact that i'm not as stupid as they think i am and i'm not going to go looking for a lorry or car to go get run over by.

but sometimes i'm graetfull for thier over protectfulness

it will all pay off in the long run...

i think...

i hope!

I think that it is hard for some young people e.g. Me to take my parents seriously when i was looking after my siblings from 4 years old ..I'm a young carer so yeah taking parents seriously is hard for me.
