Bird flu has been in the news again recently;
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7133273.stm
Is any one remotely scared about bird flu? There was a lot of fuss about it last year, people were predicting doom for mankind, but nothing ever happened. Why is bird flu given so much attention, when common flu kills so many more people?

because news is an industry.
There wasn't much going on so they made a big deal out of it.
You'd have to actually kill an infected bird and then play with it's carcass to stand a remote chance of catching bird flu. It's highly unlikely.

One day there will be a bad flu epidemic yes but I can't tell you if it will be this particular virus or whether it will be in 5 years or 50 years.

I think it is a scare mongering thing among newspapers sometimes especially this, even the experts don't know.

again, i think it's an issue of lacking in knowledge and sufficient research to understand this disease, even if the 'big deals' make it out to be able to evolve, like some viruses etc can and do do, then this could be a horrible epidemic if it manages to hit humans. Correct me if i'm wrong, but apparently there have been a couple of humans to catch a vague form of the virus already? maybe it CAN and DOES affect us, the reality is there, but it's just too weak to affect us in the same way.
i'm not saying we should fear bird flu just yet, just be wary of it

The trouble will come when Bird Flu can be spread between humans, not everyone will survive ... it will mostly be the young/healthy people who will die - they will try and fight it so much, their lungs will fill with fluid trying to fight it - and they will drown.Visit www.ukresilience.gov.uk

Maybe because in the past animals have been the cause for big deaths. Such as rats in the plague. Maybe people are thinking it may happen again - hopefully it won't.
Also, there are many bird eaters in this country so the fuss is making people aware of what they are eating.

I think the point as shown on www.ukresilience.gov.uk is that if it becomes transferable between humans - we have no resistence to it and will likely die.
