One of my Constituents has contacted me after doing a Hustings event at their school, and has asked me an interesting question.

Why Don't the Government help to fund expeditions and extreme activities around the world?

Now, the theroy behind this, is that teenagers just don't have the money to go on adventures around the world, and expeditions, and the government should help fund it, because it will deter more teenagers from drugs, sex and alcohol

What do you think?

In July this year some mates and I are going to South Africa to do voluntary work with local schools, etc. Finding funding has been a nightmare... but, if I'd been on income support, etc. I could have had the whole trip paid for me! Unfortunately though, both my parents work...

Anyway, that aside - best shot you've got is your local "Youth Opportunities Fund" which apparently can help with such projects. Our application is pending...

Deter drugs, sex and alcohol??? That's a bit of a dubious connection in my opinion.

On the face of it, it is

However, look a little deeper, if people see more of the world, become wiser more experienced, less naive and find that there is something to live for other than cheap chemical highs it may deter drug use.

As lovely as these schemes sound though... there's only so much people can do after a certain stage. The real problem lies with poor upbringing because of the destruction of the family unit... Cheers NuLabour!

Most people that lived in Thatcher times agree that whilst financially they may have been less well off, they certainly had strong family values and an improved quality of life.

I do agree with you there, there is a massive social problem, and it cannot really be solved at the moment, we need to teach family values to the parents of tomorrow now, so that this shoddy notion of upbringing is phased out...

I don't think the Goveremnmt should fund school trips simply because there is so much more the money could be spent on such as midwives or police. Once everything else is sorted out then we can start splashing out on trips paragliding etc.

Everything is else will never be sorted out, because by taking money from one thing you leave another area deficient, and then that will need work on it, there is no solution to that problem. However, I wouldn't say splashing out on school trips is a fantastic idea, however, if it is an aid project, put together by YP for YP and they clearly seem to know what they are doing then YOF should at least go halvsies.

That's what I ment but if in the chance Tinkerbell waved her magic wand, them money could be spent on less inportant parts of society.

i think youth fundig would be a fab idea but money deosnt grow out of thin air if we want fud trips and what not why not make it community involved e.g car boot sales, baking and what not, sponsers and turn it ito a charity event

And if the government's sending teenagers jetting off around the world, what happens to the government being more environmentally friendly?

can i ask a question. The derbyshire youht council has been given £1.5 million to spen over 2 years on bids. some of the members have said that we should give lower youth forums some of the money so they can have a say and get more involved witht the youth council.

i dissagree as we have been voted in to the youh council, they have not. we have been givent a mandae to make the decision if a bid goes in or not. they have not.

what do you all think about this.

I think if it has been allocated to your youth council, then it should only be you that spends it.

However. You should let the lower youth forums know that you have recieved this money and are open to suggestions from then. This will involve them more, yt leave you ultimately in control of the money.

May i ask who the funding is from?
