hi all
when you get in year 10 you get to go on work experiance for 2 weeks
do you think you should get paid for the work you do
i personally think you should due to the fact that you are stopping 2 week of your education for 2 weeks and being rewarded with pay you may want to consider going into that kind of profession when your older
what do you think
cheers

I don't think you should get paid for it. It's part of your education in a way because you're learning what it's like to be at work for a week or however long you may have. Plus, I don't think a lot of employers would take on people for work experience if it means having to pay them.

do you think you should get paid for the work you do
To justify pay you should have to do something productive for your employer, however many people do something which they are interested in but which they can't really be productive in but they can observe others doing it. This is definately true in scientific jobs.
I think that if you want one of these "experiences" it is no advantage to the employer to have you there and if anything could be an inconvenience.
Plus if employers are made to pay you then a lot of them won't take people at all and pupils will miss out on good oportunities.
I personaly got to do an interesting media work experience in the NHS which I couldnt have got paid for because TBH I didnt help them a lot (after all the full times managed for the other 50 weeks a year). I prefered doing this than for example working in a shop where I could justify pay because it is an interesting experience rather than simply something to endure and hope not to end up in again in the future.

I personnaly think that work experience is very good as it is first taste of working properly. Even though you may work upto 2 weeks, I don't think that the employee has to paid the person who is on work experience. Why, because it is experience, not making money. Also the schools probably, don't like students making money. lol.:D ;) :)

When I was at school work experience was only for a week but as Karen pointed out it's part of your education so therefore you shouldn't get paid for it.
When I was on work experience I went to a college and basically shadowed a media teacher, so therefore I didn't really do any work worth being paid for. A lot of people at my school decided to do it just because it was a week out of school.

Exactly and if they paid one person they would have to pay everyone.

The only reason work experience is attainable is because the employer does not have to pay you. I got work experience as an assistant in Glyndebourne Opera House! Do you think I would have got picked for that job if I was being paid for it. Payment entails an element of responsibility, so if things go wrong...etc... Plus, its 'experience', not actual work, most people merely 'observe', no one is going to pay you for that. If they do get you to do stuff, e.g my sister was almost selling houses on her WE haha then they might give u a money pressie....but they won't pay you. If they do you're also subject to all sorts of laws eg being under the employability age health and safety etc.

You shouldn't be paid for it anyway, your not employed by the company.

you shouldnt get paid for work experiance......the employers have taken a risk on you and given you a chance.......its part of your education...........

Must do :)
When i did my work experience i didn't get paid but some of my friends did, which i thought was a bit unfair. I agree that you shouldn't get paid for it though

No, you should not get paid for it. The idea is that it's experience of what it's like to work.. if you were getting paid, it would be quite simply just "work."
Anyway, if you're good enough they'll keep you on after your placement.
i did work experience at a pharmacy i got an award and i got £100 for two weeks because he said i worked hard and i did i really good job!! it was soo unexpected but i was really pleased!!
i liked talking to the customers and helping them it was fab!!!!!
i really enjoyed my work experience although it was tiring! :D :D
If they pay one person, then it's a bit unfair not to pay the rest.
Some people go into work experience and end up doing hardly any work, so therefore they shouldn't paid, so in my opinion no one should be paid for it.

I think you should get paid becasue you are doing what they would do in a proper job so you should get paid unless whoever took you always has to tell you what to do. if you work like another employee then you should get paid. In my opinion.

I don't agree you should get paid for work experiance in any cases. It normally costs you employer a lot to have you for a week/fortnight so why should they pay you on top when it is contributing to your future??
However, I do think that if you have to travel far or pay high expenses then you should be able to be reimbursed.

If this legislation being battled by the UKYP falls through - we will have a more streamlined bus service for kids anyway! :D
Many people I know who have gone on Work Experience have worked for charity shops and charity organisations - where even people who are there on a more full-time basis do not get paid - so that would be impractical.

I worked with a cerebal palsy charity and the reimbursed my travel and £2 towards lunch which is what they do for all volunteers.
My school doesn't do work experience because we do 4 GCSEs early in year 10 (& one of the teachers said that they think most work experience isn't good - just have u main coffee and stuff rather than actual shadowing/working)
My brother got paid for his work experience (he did it where he had a Saturday job in the chemist already so they gave him his normal wage).
What are the chances you could get a day shadowing an MP or one of their researchers?
as much as it would be gr8 to be paid for a week of work, i dnt think you should do, the whole point of work experience, is for the experience to get a feel of what its like at work, not to actually be employed.
Its apart of our education, you dnt get paid for oing to school, so y should it be any diff 4 this?

My work expierance was okay I was working in an Housing Department. And I worked hard and got a glowing report.
However NO MONEY!, Free labour for two weeks and I get a box of choclates where they trying to imply something?!
The cheating b*******.
I worked at a Barclay's bank major office block for 2 weeks. I didn't recieve any pay, gifts, come-back-soon's and overall was very dull and (turned out) not very relevent to my career. However, I did recieve some remunification from the stationary supply cupboard. You could literally walk up take a pack of pencils for "work", put it in your bag, and do the same an hour later.
Let's just say after those 2 weeks, I still haven't brought any more stationary since (and I'm in year 12)!
By the way, I've noticed that after work experience many people decide ona career, saying its neither not or is for them. I was one of those who decided not, and this was thanks to my work experience. However, I now would like to try out my later career choice, now that I'm older and more decided.
To get to the point, don't you think it would be a good idea to have a 2nd work experience when you are in 6th form/colledge.
:Vampiress:
04-14-2008, 11:39
My school or Sixth Form offer that. You have to work in an establishement for up to three weeks to get a good experiance or work life. However you do get paid so atleast it will be worth something.

I have shadowed my MP :D
I went to a primary school and did an interactive session with them on issues and how to tackle them, as he was running late.
Then to a private meeting with a CEO
Then to a surgery.

...kkkk......
i went to London and looked around the houses of parliament with my MP and matt christodoulou and a couple of other people from my school.
I really don't think you need to be paid for it... besides, many people get offered weekend or summer jobs if they're good enough.
Work Experience students are often more of a liability than an asset to businesses (insurance, supervision, using resources) and tend to do menial tasks that anyone can do.
The only real advantage is the hope that it inspires the young person to do that kind of job and hope that there's some loyalty.
To be honest, it's really up to the business if they pay Work Experience (I hear some firms do).
And Matt P, yeah the free stationery is usually a nice perk :) You can never have too many branded staplers!
Well, work shadowing is when you watch people. Work Experience is when you are taking on the role of a proper job, so techincally paid.
But that is in theory, in real life you do not have the training to do the job if you are in an airport for example - you cannot do check-in or fly a plane.
For the people who are going to work in Tesco stacking shelves though, there is a greater reason to pay them, as they are doing work to the standard of usual employers. But the advantage of that is they might actually be able to get a proper job after the work experience is finished which does involve money :)
you are lucky you get any work experiance at my school we don't have any at all. Aparnently 'our parents aren't paying for us to go to work!'
work experience is usefull if it only tells you thats the job you dont want to do! i mean its not really about the money although that would be and is nice, its more about giving you a taste of working life. i think its supposed to be a slap in the faces saying ' if you dont like this job work harder in school and do something with your life, or if you do like this job work hard in school so you'l b able to do this job' if you get me
i think thats what its aims are.......

if i wanna shadow someone id stay at school
experience is getting out there and doing it yourself.

I didn't get to go on Work Experience until year eleven and it was only for one week not two! It's unfair! Why do some people get to do it in year 10, why do somepeople get two weeks?
Please answer my qustion why the time and age you do work experince is up to the individual schools and not the government?
I must speak plain

But if you pay one, you have to pay the rest, else it's unfair. Unless you do a self placement you don't get to choose where you want to go, you get it handed to you.

We have to wait until Year 11 and only work for one week. By then most of us have small jobs anyway

Probably not (to be honest), but I wouldn't expect it as it is supposed to be the skills you develop that count.
The whole point of Work Experience is to set you up for later life and see what a typical work environment is.

You got placed in a placement? Doesn't that defeat the object a little?
We have to find our own place at my school and my placement ended up only being for 4 days because the whole of the school i was going to was on a trip for one day and they said to not bother coming in. i wasquite disappointed at that (i was actually looking forward to it)

i did my work experiance last year with the NHS.
and my placement was between 3 hospitals in portsmouth
basically i had to help set up clinics, talk to the medical staff about careers, work with the finance dept, the post dept. i also went on training courses such as health&safety and manual handling and i got lk real qualifications. basically just to get a feel of all the dpartments.
i only worked about 5 hours a day for two weeks.
i had quite alot of rights as in i could see patients records and sit in on appointments and no the procedures and where the keyts were etc.
but it was absolutly brilliant and sounded alot better than peoples placements at hairdressers etc. where all they did was make cups of tea and sweep floors.
:D
I went a few years ago to the local Magistrate's Court, truly enlightening experience.

Did mine with West Mids Police and got a job out of it so happy days!:D
Did my work experinence in year 10 at my local primary school- put me off teaching little kids!
Later this year im doing work shadowing with my MP :)
my work experience was at a pharmacy i loved it! :D
i got payed tooo! £100 for two weeks was rather proud! :D :D
I've got 2 1/2 weeks work experience at my local council in human resources and policy making. Although I don't really know what that means. I've had a interview so they could think of things to do so I don't get bored. I know most people don't do alot of work and businesses won't be keen to take people on if they have to pay, since they already have to do all those Health and Safety contracts etc.. Besides there isn't a minimum wage till you get to 16, I think, so there would be a question of how much. But it would be nice to get a reward for all your work, other than a 'sense of achievement'.:p

Am I missing something here? Do you want to be paid for holidays and weekends and hours not doing homework too lol?
You should not be paid because that would mean that buisnesses are unwilling to employ you - work experience people are not a benefit to them
Also if it was optional pay then people would go to jobs like in a supermarket where they would get paid rather than true work experience in the area they are after (e.g. a hospital) where they wont get any money thus meaning the experience is compleately useless.
Also if payed you would have to do the job, rather than get to also see what others at the work place do - e.g. I got taken to watch in on a buisness proposals meeting which was really useful and interesting but obviously my view of the proposal wasnt useful at all.
can any one advise me on wot to do?

I see your point but work experience is designed to show you what happens in the work place that you might end up in, rather than the bar you work in part time before you graduate.
