View Full Version : Should we Include the Welsh Dragon in the Union Flag

I dont think so because the Act of Union (1536) Brought them together as one. I have nothing against the welsh dragon - I just dont think It would sit nicely upon our flag.
Opinions??

If anything were to be included it would be the Cross of St. David, because the Union Flag is composed of crosses, not national symbols.

How would incorporate the yellow on black cross and still make the Union Jack look good?
Daniel Frost

It'd be hard, but I think I've seen it done okay.
A better method might be, if Wales really really wants in, to scrap the Union Flag and replace it with something incorporating national symbols as opposed to Saints' crosses.

Scrawl 'Wales says hi' in the middle of the flag...

I say no as it would make the flag look terrible, furthermore why bother changing one of the most recognisable flags in use, one so awesome that many countries, territories and states use it in their own flags?

Absolutely. The Union Jack is known around the world and it has some history behind it.
Changing it now would be tacky.

Wales is represented in the Union flag, with the red Cross of St George.

I agree, there is red and white in the welsh flag so it is represented by those colours as well as England in my opinion.

England and Wales is one place - Thats why I am confused at why people want the Welsh Flag Incorporated into the Union Flag
(Act of Union 16th Century)

The flag shouldn't have the Welsh dragon because it would make the Union Jack look a lot worse and the Union Jack at the moment is instantly recognisable across the world.
No. If you put the Welsh dragon in the centre then it looks as if it's an identifier, some sort of badge of office or regional variant (cf. the flag of the Governor of Queensland), if you put it anywhere else it looks as if Wales is superior or subordinate to the rest of the UK, which isn't what you're trying to achieve. As for the Cross of Saint David, it would be a bit like the the Cross of Saint Patrick used for Ireland, ie a not particularly widely used symbol but convenient to add to the flag. And pity the poor people at Cowley who'll have to change the way they paint Mini roofs just to put the cross of St David or the Welsh dragon!
I dont care what Welsh symbol is used on the Union Flag but there should be one. And St Georges flag doesnt count.

Technically it does beacuse of the Act of Union Wales and England are one place.

Yes but 'technically' doesnt account for the fact that calling the flag of st george Welsh is a massive slap in Wales' face.

But still, Wales and England are one place so as long as St Georges flag is there - They are represented. Plus putting the dragon on would make it look a bit stupid - Also how would his Cross fit onto the Union Flag without altering that of Georges?
Also I dont think yellow would look good on The Flag of Great Britain.

Yeah, 'Red, White, Yellow and Blue' just doesn't have that ring to it.
I might be a crazy socialist-liberal-anarchist but I'm still a patriot.
Oh for gods sake. Who cares what the flag looks like? Maybe you should care more about what the Welsh think about not being properly represented on the flag. Maybe you should care more about this Union than a pathetic flag.

My sentiments exactly.
And we're arguing over a flag. I despair sometimes...

People will not feel attachment to a new and ugly flag, when they have a historic and aesthetically pleasing one to compare with.

When people see the British flag do we really want the to think 'Dear Lord! How Disgusting!'
Even though Flags do not have as much meaning as they used to it is still good to have a decent one, so yes. It does matter.

Some symbol of Wales SHOULD be included, but i somehow doubt it's anywhere near the top of Plaid Cymru's "to do" list.

They might even see it as a handy convenience.
- Let us out of the Union
- No
- Why?
- Because we like ruling over you and treating your pitiful nation like a colony!
- But we want our independence!
- Tough. Besides, it'd be so much hassle.
- No it wouldn't. See, you don't even have to change your flag!
- Oh, yes! You're right! Well, in that case...
Even if the flag is changed, I will still fly the Union Jack.
Take that Austin:eek:

Same here!
I wouldn't fly it if it looked as bad as Mockler's face, which it would if it had some dragon plastered over the top. :(
I would fly it. I would also fly the Scottish saltire, but from a smaller and subordinate flagpole. Then Scotland will declare war on the UK successor state, then we shall invade Scotland and nuke the lot and then we shall reunite the Union. And as there won't be any Scots left, we shall stay united and we can go back to the old flag. So, a new flag could be very useful.

Our flag should be Thatcher riding an enraged Dragon forth into battle, yielding the shield of Britannia (http://www.sonofthesouth.net/uncle-sam/images/britannia.jpg).

Should the welsh dragon be in the union jack...hmm, why i don't see why not, but then again think of all them people wanting welsh/scotish/english inderpendance, they aren't going to want to see the flags been merged together even more. Plus think how hard it would be to draw if the welsh dragon was on the flag.
I always thought that the welsh flag was included, with the white background, alright i know english and scottish flag has white bacground too, but they have also made red the most stand outish section in the flag with welsh and english flag consisting of red. Where could it be put, you couldn't have it traditional red when the middle of the cross is red, you couldn't see it, so then people would want to change all the flag.
More hassle than its worth if you ask me, i say the flag stays as it is!!
