View Full Version : Condom Machines in toilets; Subsidize?

3x£1 for a packet of the greatest invention this century. Three condoms. That may sound like a bargain, but I'll be honest here; how many teens can -regularly- afford that? And more importantly, how many teens keep three one-pound coins in their pocket?!
I fervently believe that condoms machines in toilet's should be subsidized. Why? Because many people, young and old alike, are too nervous to buy over the counter the cheaper, bulk packets, or go to their nurse for free ones, and as such, use these overpriced machines. You could leave this down to a cultural issue, that the English are too squirmish about their sexuality. But the cause, no matter how interesting, still leads to the problem of people having to pay a fair bit for something that could potentially save their life.
Solution? Take some of the free condoms and put them into machines in public toilets, for a small fee of something, say, £1 for three, give or take, and then let nature run it's course. This idea may seem strange, but looking at the statistics, I say any response is better than what we're in at the moment. I don't like having the "highest number of teenage pregnancies in Europe" tag stapled to England, and more importantly, her teenagers.

Where do the profits of condoms go to?

In scotland it's three for a pound (save in some edinburgh nightclubs) and in the student district of Dundee it's three for ten pence.
I think the student ones are subsidised - but the companies could still make a profit at three for 50p and it would be affordable. Working solution?

When I was in South Africa, toilets in say shopping centres and public places generally gave them away free (in dispensers.)

That would be AIDS control. Bloody sensible as about 20% of all adults down their have it.

Durex? That's who makes most of them.
I think this is a good idea but you need to put alot more in more rural areas. If i want to buy condoms with our everyone knowing in my area i need to go an hour and a half to the nearist city.
In my school we have a youth devlepment office and every week i go and put a load of different types of condoms in there that i got from the local docs. Every so oftern i go in and sit and tell people that if they have a problem they can come and see me or if they want to find anything out.
Any similer set ups in your schools??

We have a health thingy after school and at lunch times.. people go there, get multi-coloured sperm keyrings and free condoms which end up being blown up and used as balloons, then they leave.

I saw the sperm keyrings! Someone at a youth event in Romsey was giving them out and so my friend had one.

I can't see that these break the bank to be honest. This is just asking for the sake of it, it seems to me.

At Oxford University they have a condom machine that charges 2p
I think the point of it is that they are intended to be free but it simply stops one person emptying the machine to use as balloons.
A lot of gay bars and clubs do give away free condoms, but the money still has to come from somewhere.

Hey,
You think that is a problem, what about the overpriced santary products in those machines e.g sanatairy towels..

The NHS should have free machines.
If you think about the effects of cost on the NHS for treatment of STIs, Pregnancy, Abortion etc. paying for condoms is alot simpler, and can free up time within hospitals.
And I can't say I've ever used sanitary towels, starlock :p but I imagine they will be more expensive then condoms because condoms reduce targets (STI rates), and well sanitary towels don't.
it's a good idea in theory, but how many do you think will end up a baloon or over people's head? maybe if the subsidised machines were in hopitals or doctors toilets? the place were people would be less likely to go to mess around.

You've no idea how many times I've pulled in the doctors surgery and said to myself
"If only there were a condom machine nearby..."

Bars and pubs are alot more effeciant places rather than docotors and hospitals, they're more accessible on a daily basis and in places were casual sex is more likely to happen.

The OP is back! And I'm ready to defend my stance. And first of all, I never meant "free" condoms. No! Light forbid! Then we get the issue of no-one taking condoms seriously. I just mean cheaper, that's all. A pound for five-or maybe ten! If you pay for them, it makes the buyer feel more inclined that they will work, or might actually be worth trying. If you give them for free...Well, it's not only a massive waste of money for the NHS who is trying so very hard, light bless their hard-working souls, to prevent pregnancies and instead wake up to see a condom round a teens hand using it as a sock puppet, but it also makes it seem almost lame. Besides, most places were they are for free are places teens would rather not go. Would you want to go to some stranger for free condoms? I think not! I'd take my chances with the expensive ones; and if they can't afford the expensive ones, they might not get one at all. It's the anonymity that counts. The faceless vending machine can't judge you. A doctor can.

You can get them for free on the NHS and some organisations. There's this van that comes into my school to give sex advice and it gives them out

Becasue there is nothing else to do out there :p
If they were made free people would take the ****. I know me and most of my uni friends would get loads and use them as balloons. Who wouldn't?

Seriously Austin wtf. Why do you keep bumping up old threads when you have nothing to say?

I didn't realise how old it was. Plus, people are discussing the topic. It is okay to bump up old threads on a decent topic in my opinion.
Anyone who doesn't have the balls to buy condoms over the counter shouldn't be having sex.
You can get condoms free of the NHS.
I've found that those condoms 1. are small and 2. break quite easily.

The Zone in Plymouth, which is a bit like a YES centre, gives you 6 free condoms everytime you go. Durex ones, in any variety you so wish.

I guess the local clinic is just cheap.
Condoms have a high failure rate anyway. Wouldn't it be safer to *not* engage in sexual activities at all?

Try saying that from the other side.

It's agood idea to make the cost of condoms in distributors to be very low, but now free if not there will be quite a bit of wastidge from kids who'll just make ballons with them. Also there should be more in the country side, since not only are the machines nearly always out in the open when there are some, but you have the whole village that knows you are going to be doing it with so an so. In little comunities like that it is a pain in the butt.
The solution is simple. If they cannot afford the condoms from the nearest local toilet condom machine, then they must visit their local NHS and ask for some! Isn't that what they're there for?
